SUKHAWAT ALI KHAN represents the family lineage of the 600-year-old Sham Chorasi traditional school of music, which was established during the reign of Emperor Akbar of India. His training in both classical raga and Sufi Qawwali singing began at the age of seven under his father, legendary Pakistani/Indian vocalist Ustad Salamat Ali Khan. A San Francisco Bay Area resident, Sukhawat teaches this musical style and performs concerts for dance and world music lovers everywhere.
Sukhawat's unique ability to draw from traditional and contemporary musical forms has helped him develop collaborations that are truly cross-cultural, such as the group Shabaz. Sukhawat has performed at the Montreal, Monterey and Prospect Park jazz festivals, the Fillmore in San Francisco, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and many other major venues and music festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe. Award winner at Feria Flamenca 2000, young José Gálvez is heir to the pure gypsy tradition of Cante Jondo. Gálvez was born and raised in Jerez de la Frontera, in the “flamenquísimo” Santiago neighborhood of the poet and Saeta singer, Paco Galvez. In 1997 he was featured on the compilation “Jerez Joven por Bulerias” (out of print) produced by the legendary guitarist, ‘Moraito’. In 1999 he recorded his first solo album “Bohemio de Amor”. His works attracted local and National attention employing him with artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Juaquin Cortez, and Antonio Canales.

Little Charlie Baty has been long associated with the popular blues band 'Little Charlie and the Nightcats' that existed for over 30 years and recorded ten CDs for Alligator Records. After his decision to retire from non-stop touring, Charlie put his energy into starting a small gypsy jazz and swing combo that played across musical lines. Charlie's love of the music of Django Reinhardt, fused with his extensive knowledge of blues and swing, provides a unique guitar voice in the gypsy style. Jason Vanderford was invited to participate as a guitarist from the celebrated group 'Hot Club of San Francisco' and his strong rhythmic pulse, youthful energy, and interesting solo ideas greatly enhance the project. Long time musicologist and multi-talented instrumentalist Bob Armstrong was also called on to join the Caravan, and brings an incredible knowledge of songs from the 20's and beyond along with the skill to play guitar, steel guitar, ukelele, accordion, and saw. This plethora of sound possibilities greatly expands the quartet sound. Finally, the bass position was filled by Keith Cary, another musician who excels on many instruments and is familiar with swing, polka, country western, and many other important genres for the Little Charlie Caravan. Cookie Segelstein, 19th Century violin and viola,
Stuart Brotman, bass, basy, and baraban,
Joshua Horowitz, tsimbl and 19th Century accordion
Veretski Pass offers a unique and exciting combination of virtuosic musicianship and raw energy that has excited concertgoers across the world. Between the three members of this band, there are eight instruments on stage; violin, viola, two tsimbls (hammered dulcimer), 19th century button accordion, bass, bassetl (three stringed bass), basy (three stringed Polish folk cello) and baraban (Jewish style drum). this band of veterans plays klezmer music of historical Eastern Europe on original instruments; melodies from Ukraine, Carpathian-Ruthenia, Bessarabia and Rumania. Much of this rare music has been gleaned from field recordings gathered by the musicians themselves in numerous trips throughout Europe. With its colorful instrumentation and unique arrangements, this seminal ensemble carries on the ancient tradition of klezmer musicians, playing music of all kinds, but with a recognizable Jewish sound.
PRESS REVIEWS:
Fiery and virtuosic dance music, and melancholy alternated back and forth and transported the listeners through an emotionally intensive musical journey which captured much of the rural originality. The audience was excited and danced at the end, new sense of abandon…Buersche Zeitung; Ruhr Nachrichten, April 19, 2004
…Joshua Horowitz, who together with Stuart Brotman is one of the leading musicians of the traditional klezmer performance style. They make music together with violinist Cookie Segelstein in the group Veretski Pass which stands as one of the best ensembles of the klezmer revival. Christoph Wagner, Schwartzwälder Bote, Kultur #233, October 7, 2004
…Is klezmer music an international music of the soul? That was the impression that this concert left behind. Cookie Segelstein, revealed with her violin an unlimited array of sound possibilities. She let her violin speak, cry, laugh and dance, and gave it a human voice with a multifaceted power of expression. Beside her was Joshua Horowitz, a master of the button accordion and the tsimbl, which is an old and almost forgotten instrument of klezmer music. On the trapezoidal instrument with three bridges and one hundred and five strings, he enchanted us with small spoonlike wooden hammers; creating a beautiful carpet of sound with a huge range and unbelievable speed and facility, evoking images of a long forgotten world. Finally, Stuart Brotman embodied a calm, steely power on the cello he played. He surrounded the (awake)vibrant violin, which was in a constant chase of duet and dance with the accordion and tsimbl, and gave a warm ground and background to the music.
Everything about this evening was perfect: A music that touched the soul of this transfixed audience. Those who listened with their hearts found on this evening, their own roots. Suzanne Grimm, Schwäbeische Zeitung, October 11, 2004

Chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that's truly international. Her multi-ethnic French / Chinese / American upbringing colors the songs on her debut album. It's called Le Chemin, "The Path," and for good reason: Jessica takes the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the lands of gypsy jazz, Chinese and Latin American folk music, through the classic American repertoire, and off into the wilderness of her imagination. She's performing on vocals, accordion and toy piano and backed by an amazing quartet of clarinet/sax/flute, upright bass, guitar, and drums.
PRESS REVIEWS:
Jessica Fichot performs her polyglot repertoire in a soft, crystalline voice as alluring as her crimson gowns. (...) Her sound is a cosmic cabaret, a delicious blend of acoustic styles delivered with syncopated verve by her quartet." San Francisco Chronicle by Andrew Gilbert
Her songs and voice are delightful, as pure an instrument channeled through lovely evocations of love and love lost as you'll ever hear. There is an innocence and beauty all over Le Chemin that is sadly rare but wholly welcome in a relentlessly ugly world. The French-chanson tradition is alive and well in this Los Angeles resident's repertoire. LA Weekly by Michael Simmons
Jessica Fichot (...) has built a gorgeous globe-spanning repertoire. Monterey County Weekly by Andrew Gilbert
