Édessa

Édessa captures the passion and vitality at the heart of Balkan music. Using both traditional and modern instruments, Édessa performs in a variety of styles featuring long sets that interweave personal improvisation with traditional melodies, and swings with powerful old-world grooves.

Édessa draws on the rich cultural expressions of the southern Balkans. Their extensive repertoire includes music from Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Armenia, and Turkey, and music of the Balkan Roma (Gypsy). Having devoted decades to the study and performance of these traditions, the musicians in Édessa play with a deep understanding of the connection between music and dance, and of the power of this music for personal and collective expressions.

The sounds of the ensemble include the ancient and mesmerizing music of the zurna and davul, the lyrical and sweet music of the Greek islands, the haunting, trance-like pentatonic music of Epirus, and at the other end of the acoustic spectrum, the sizzling, contemporary Bulgarian fusion known simply as "wedding music".

Édessa is in constant demand for events ranging from a variety of ethnic events to American-style folk dancing. These include Kurdish wedding celebrations, Greek glendia (festivals), Rom (Gypsy) spring celebrations, Armenian parties, Bulgarian national holidays, and folkdance workshops, dances, camps and festivals. Édessa travels nationally and internationally.

An Evening of Balkan Music with

Eva Salina & Peter Stan

Eva Salina

Eva Salina is a renowned singer, interpreter, and teacher of traditional and traditionally-based Balkan music.  Nurtured through years of mentorship by some of the greatest living Balkan musicians, Eva has devoted her life to the longevity and evolution of East European musical traditions. Eva’s rich, supple voice moves effortlessly through the intricate and demanding expression inherent in Romani songs, intertwining vintage pop sounds with her singular interpretations. Eva is a 2012 OneBeat Fellow, a 2015 NYFA Fellow in Folk/Traditional Arts, and a 2016 OneBeat Istanbul Fellow; she is also an experienced, devoted educator and an in-demand vocal instructor and consultant, working internationally with singers of all levels of experience.

Eva Salina is a well established singer/interpreter of Balkan music based in New York (a Santa Cruz native). Peter is a Romani Accordion player from Serbia based in New York. They have been working together as a Duo since the release of Eva's latest album, "LEMA LEMA: EVA SALINA SINGS ŠABAN BAJRAMOVIĆ" which was released in 2016

Peter “Perica” Stan is a Serbian/Romanian Romani accordionist known equally for his playfulness and innovation as he is for his undeniably soulful, intuitive improvisations.  Thirty years working as a freelance musician in New York City have broadened the spectrum of his musical influences far beyond his direct cultural heritage, so you never know what Peter will coax out of his instrument, what story he will weave—each song different, every time.

Together, Eva and Peter draw on a strong musical friendship, the diversity of their creative professional experiences, and their shared love of Balkan Romani music, creating a welcoming space where joy and sorrow seamlessly coexist. In their performance, mournful ballads nestle gently among songs of celebration, bringing the listener on a journey that encapsulates both the beauty and the complexity of daily life.

Eva Salina & Peter Stan are currently recording their first duo album, to be released in 2017.

Named after a Django Reinhardt tune, the Rhythm Future Quartet performs dynamic and fiery arrangements of Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions.

The quartet features Jason Anick on violin, Olli Soikkeli and Jimmy Grant on guitars, and Greg Loughman on bass. Over the years they have individually been performing alongside notable musicians like John Jorgenson, Frank Vignola, Tommy Emmanuel, Bucky Pizzarelli, Andreas Öberg and Howard Alden and have finally joined forces to form this special group.

Jason Anick and Olli Soikkeli, the front-men and lead soloists of the group, have been receiving critical acclaim this past year and are considered ‘rising stars’ in the world of Jazz and Gypsy Jazz.

An evening of Gypsy Jazz with... The Rhythm Future Quartet

One of the youngest instructors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Jason Anick is rapidly making a name for himself in the world of jazz violin and mandolin. In addition to leading his own ensemble and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at Hartt Conservatory.  He went on to record on Jorgenson's latest CD One Stolen Night, which was named one of the top 10 albums of 2010 by both the LA Times and Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Jason's composition "Occupy" won 3rd place in the 2013 international songwriting competition in the jazz category.

Words of Praise:

The Wall Street Journal wrote “Olli Soikkeli, a riveting finnish guitarist who combines astonishing dexterity and speed with pure soul in a way that places him among the worthiest current day successors to the legacy of the great Django.”

Jason is a "Rising Star" in the Annual Downbeat Critic's Poll.

"The young Berklee instructor’s accomplished second CD, “Tipping Point,” on which his compositional voice is as distinctive as his virtuoso playing"

The Boston Globe

"Loughman delivers not only the bass foundation for the pieces rhythms, but also over and over again intriguing, melodic, cleanly stated solos. If [he wasn't] teaching in Augusta, Maine... [he] no doubt would be continuing to develop a solid reputation in New York.”

-Bill Donaldson, Cadence Magazine, 2011

“Loughman swings with something close to nonchalance... but can equally arrest the listener’s attention with his deeply resonant soloing.”

-Paul Donnelly, jazz critic, ejazz news  2004

Olli Soikkeli was born in Nurmes, Finland in 1991. Now based in New York City. He started playing guitar at age of 12. After a few years of playing Olli was introduced to the music of great Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz has been Ollis main focus ever since. Soon Olli was playing in jazz clubs and festivals all around Finland.

Despite his young age he’s already played with stars such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Andreas Öberg, Samson Schmitt, Anat Cohen, Tommy Emmanuel, Paulus Schäfer, Antti Sarpila and Marian Petrescu.

In 2011 Olli recorded his first album "Trois Générations" with Hot Club de Finlande and Vitali Imereli and in 2012 he recorded his second album "Kouvola Junction" with Paulus Schäfer and Arnoud van den Berg.

2014 Rhythm Future Quartet's debut album was released.
